When choosing phlox for the garden, consider some of the lesser-known kinds, which are the most carefree. All phlox bear the distinctive, five-petaled, flat-faced flowers.
Phlox needs full sun to light shade, depending on the species. Fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil. Grow disease-resistant varieties to prevent problems with mildew and thin out. With soil kept evenly moist, spider mite problems are reduced.
The taller types are best for beds and borders. Use the shorter, spreading types in wildflower and woodland gardens. The mat-forming types are great for spilling over walls, the fronts of borders, edging walks, or rock gardens.
Popular varieties: wild blue phlox, woodland phlox, spotted phlox, wild sweet william, garden phlox, creeping phlox, moss phlox.
