Saving Seeds from Your Garden....

For many gardeners, the garden actually begins in January when the first seed catalog arrives in the mailbox. While the cold wind howls outside, we retire to a cozy chair and leaf through the catalog, carefully notating which varieties of lettuce and tomatoes to try and wishing we had the space to plant each and every flower so artfully displayed on its pages. But have you ever wondered where your great-grandparents acquired...

Shady Gardens....

Recently, a friend’s 13-year old son was sitting with us on my back deck and noticed the heavy canopy of trees that provided a dense shade throughout my backyard. He wondered if I preferred so much shade or would rather have more sunlight? It was a good question! Shady backyards, courtyards, and terraces are soothing respites from the heat of the summer. On the other hand, for us gardeners, these low-sun spots create...

Azaleas can be either evergreen or deciduous. Deciduous Azaleas are known as Mollis or Exbury Azaleas. They bloom in the early spring with vivid orange and yellow colors. They bloom later in the spring, and are...

Daffodils don’t require deadheading, but you might want to cut the spent flowers for aesthetic reasons. Avoid the urge to “tidy up” bulb plantings after bloom by tying the leaves with string or rubber bands. The six- week leaf dieback...

Preparing Garden Beds....

If you are preparing beds for landscaping around your house this article should simplify the process for you. I say that because of everything that is written about this subject, some of it is accurate, some of it is just plain wrong, and much of it is much more complicated than it needs to be. I like to think of myself as simple Simon. I find the easiest, yet most effective way to do things, and they work. Let’s assume...

Plants for Hanging Baskets....

Plants that sprawl and scramble when planted in the ground take on a new dimension when you plant them in hanging containers. Nurseries stock hanging pots and baskets already planted and ready to hang. You can also buy the empty container and plant your own basket. Use wire baskets lined with sphagnum moss, or ceramic, plastic, or wooden containers designed for hanging. For a ball-of-flowers effect, use a moss-lined wire...
